Manatees of Crystal River, Florida

The air was cold (43 degrees F) but the water was warm (70 degrees F) on December 27, 2005.  We slipped into Florida's Crystal River at a brutally early hour to swim with the manatees in their natural environment.  They are indescribably lovely creatures - gently inquisitive, they seem to enjoy human contact - and they're great for one's self-image!  They especially love being scratched under their flippers.  They also like to chew on ropes, so they approach the boat as soon as it stops.  A few hours in their company leaves you feeling totally relaxed and peaceful.
